THE CALL OF DAWN

The Call of Dawn

A collage of compositions in Raag Ahirbhairav.

1. Oned

A young maiden encounters iconic images of Ardhanariswara, the Non-Dual Divine and the Shiva Linga, the symbol of the eternal principle of male-female union. In this preface based on the picturesque poetry of Shri Adi Shankaracharaya, the explicit images empower and license her to imagine her approaching union and revel in the seamlessness, harmony, and oneness of the masculine and the feminine. Embodying the powerful and divine masculine and feminine forms in their divided and united appearance, enables the young girl to experience the power and sensuality of her being.

2. Ahirini

The Rebel Poet Kazi Nazrul sensitively nudges the young girl to voice her choice, choosing Krishna over Shiva, accessible over intimidating, passionate over fierce, dark over radiant, the allurer over the forbidding. In a moment of epiphany, she has a vision of a passing Mendicant and wonders if it is a sign, a glimpse, of her life companion. Her resolve is simple. She wishes for a consort as Krishna, the cardinal love and not the overpowering and awe-inspiring Shiva. The poet’s words and composition are a sweet young voice of dissent.

3. Chakravaaka Pallavi

Chakravaaka, the mythical Love Birds separate at every sunset and await the dawn of union. Set in the structure of a Pallavi, this dance is an abstract embodiment of the sweetness of anticipation.
