PARICHAY
A series of intensive Odissi workshops with Bijayini Satpathy
Parichay is a series of immersive studio intensives conceived and led by Bijayini Satpathy. Rooted in sustained practice and inquiry, the workshops offer participants the opportunity to engage deeply with movement through a structured and rigorous studio process.
Hosted at Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research, Auroville, the intensives are designed for dancers with prior movement experience who are prepared for focused physical practice and detailed, process-oriented learning.
Parichay I
Level I for beginner level students:
An introduction to Odissi for dancers trained in other movement and dance forms, as well as Odissi practitioners seeking an introduction to Bijayini Satpathy’s pedagogy. Specific knowledge of Odissi is not required. Prior dance training and physical preparedness for sustained practice are essential.

Workshop Dates: January 11-15, 2027
Departure: January 16, 2027 by noon
Parichay II
For intermediate level students:
An introduction to Bijayini Satpathy’s Odissi pedagogy for dancers with prior training in Odissi. Participants should have an established foundation in the form and be comfortable working within an intensive studio environment.
Arrival & Orientation: January 16, 2027 (by 4pm IST)
Workshop Dates: January 17-22, 2027
Departure: January 22 , 2027 by noon
Both intensives are immersive residential workshops, with over seven hours of studio practice each day, including body conditioning, Odissi technique, rhythm, and composition. Classes follow a call-and-response structure, allowing moments of rest and integration within the training. All sessions are taught and demonstrated by Bijayini Satpathy.
Participants should:
have prior dance or movement training appropriate to the intensive they are applying for
be physically prepared for sustained daily practice
be comfortable engaging with a structured, process-oriented studio environment
Participation is by application and audition.
FEE
The fee is based on the current residential address of the participant.International participants include those with an OCI, without an Indian passport, non-Indian origin, or residing outside of India.
Parichay 1 - Indian participants: INR 35,000 + 18% GST; International participants: USD 1,150
Parichay 2 - Indian participants: INR 35,000 + 18% GST; International participants: USD 1,150
Participants accepted into both Parichay 1 and Parichay 2 are eligible for a consolidated workshop fee.
STUDIO PRACTICE AND ELIGIBILITY
RESIDENCY VENUE
The workshops take place at Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research, Auroville, Tamil Nadu, India. Participants are accommodated on a twin-share basis in Adishakti guest houses, with vegetarian meals provided throughout the workshop.

DANCE VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS
The video should be of the sequence taught by Bijayini Satpathy. The sequence can be accessed here for Parichay I and here for Parichay II.
Wear a practice saree, kurta and salwar, or dhoti for proper form assessment.
Record the rhythm in your own voice and then perform the dance to the recording. If you absolutely cannot decipher the recitation to render it yourself, use the audio of the video.
Record the video in a well lit space, and in landscape mode only. Ensure all parts of the body within the frame at all times.
Upload the video as an "Unlisted" video on YouTube or Vimeo and ensure it is accessible (password-protected videos will lead to disqualification).
